Looks like I will be on a couple of recordings coming up soon. We are putting the finishing touches on the first Zongo All Stars full length CD and on the first CD by One Time Spaceman..... More info coming soon!
This is the time of year when things begin to slow down in the Central Coast music world for a few months. I find that it is a great time to renew and refresh the musical mind by writing music, conceiving new projects, and PRACTICING!
The big question is always what direction to go in. What do you want to hear? Give me some suggestions. Polka? Psychedelic bluegrass? Improvised music based on the compositions of Hank Williams Jr.? :) See you around soon, my friends! Oh and by the way, get ready for a FUNCTUS show around the turn of the the year! I am finding it so amazing that so many of my musical gadgets are being replaced by phones and tablet computers. Here are some of my favorites....
Time Guru by Avi Bortnik. Great metronome with lots of customizations and the ability to randomly have beats drop out to check your time. Excellent. Available for Android and iOS GarageBand for Ipad. I think this is perhaps the perfect composers sonic sketchpad. Easy to use multitracking. I have always used GarageBand for sketching ideas, etc. without worrying about sound quality. This makes it so much easier. GStrings/DaTuner These tuners work incredibly well, and now I never leave my black Korg tuner behind at jazz gigs. Android only. Play By Ear iOS ear training app with everything from intervals to chords to jazz lines. Well done. October dates are up now and Westsiders are once again called One Time Spaceman. Identity crisis at it's finest. Just added September dates to the site. I am very excited to play lots of jazz this month! Tomorrow with the great Don Rader at the Hamlet w/ Charlie Shoemake, Red Holloway at the Pewter Plough next Sunday, and later this month a couple of days with my great friend and favorite vocalist, Inga Swearingen in San Francisco.
Next Saturday we have Bayfest in Baywood Park, a free outdoor concert w/ Zongo All Stars and the great Red Skunk band. The brainchild of our trumpeter extrordinaire, Paul Irving, Bayfest is our hometown free show on the bay. My favorite show of the year! I have a feeling it will be sunny this year..... Check the multimedia page for a recent clip from the Zongo Yachting Cup in Avila Beach. Hope to see you soon! I have the pleasure to play with Charlie Shoemake tonight, 7/22/11 at the Inn At Morro Bay...... 7-10, No Cover!
SCORPIUS rises tomorrow night at Luna Red In SLO from 9-11. Scorpius is Jacob Odell, Johnee Gange, and myself, playing mostly improvised music....... We played for years as 3/4's of Functus. Come have some tapas and drinks! I have the pleasure to be able to play with the Aaron Wolf Trio Sat night at Kreutzberg Coffeehouse in San Luis Obispo with the incredible LA drummer, Jason Harnell. Should be a blast!
Also up is Zongo All Stars @ Concerts in the Plaza tonight! Fun! I have decided to add a blog section to the page to share some ideas, and thoughts, etc. I will send them along as they pass through the recesses of my mind.
